The long-anticipated Highlander reboot has hit another roadblock. Henry Cavill, who was preparing to lead the project, sustained an injury during pre-production, forcing the shoot to be postponed until 2026, as per a report on The Hollywood Reporter. Details regarding the nature of his injury remain undisclosed.

Cavill had been in intensive training for the physically demanding role and even teased fans at CinemaCon 2024, saying, “If you think you’ve seen me do sword work before, you haven’t seen anything yet.” The actor had been expected to begin principal photography this month, with the film assembling its ensemble cast in recent weeks. The production is now eyeing an early 2026 start.

Highlander is being directed by Chad Stahelski, best known for the John Wick franchise. Stahelski has been developing the project for nearly a decade, shepherding it from Lionsgate to its current home at Amazon MGM Studios. The screenplay comes from Michael Finch, who also penned John Wick: Chapter 4.

Joining Cavill in the cast are Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista, Marisa Abela, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, and Max Zhang. The film revisits the 1980s cult classic about immortal warriors, originally starring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery, which went on to inspire several sequels and a television series.

The story of Highlander follows Connor MacLeod, a Scottish warrior who discovers he is an immortal after being heavily wounded in battle. Connor is trained by Ramirez, another immortal, to win the Prize at the Gathering, held in New York City.

Behind the scenes, the project is being produced by Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt for Amazon MGM, alongside Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski’s 87Eleven Entertainment, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, and Louise Rosner.
