We had previously reported that a film centred around the iconic Miss Piggy is currently in early development, with Oscar winners Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone attached as producers. The Passengers actor has now teased what might be in store for the beloved Muppet diva, revealing that the film revolves around cancel culture. "So, during lockdown, one of my good friends who is not in the industry—it was also kind of around cancel culture,” she recalled on The Tonight Show, adding, "“It was like both things were kind of happening at once. We were all locked up in our rooms, naughty people were being locked up in prison."
Calling Miss Piggy a "feminist icon", Lawrence said, "It would be so funny if Miss Piggy got canceled. Now, that is not the plot, necessarily, but it got the wheels turning."
Reminscing how the film started, she pointed out that there has been any solo project about Miss Piggy. "So, I started kind of producing it. But Emma Stone is the Muppet-head. Also, Emma Stone is a shark … I’m, just like, the ideas guy. So, I went to her to be like, ‘What do we do?’ So, now Cole is writing it, and they’re perfect," she added.
The upcoming film's screenplay will be penned by Escola, best known for Oh, Mary!. Though plot details are still under wraps, Lawrence hinted that both she and Stone might appear in front of the camera as well. “I think so. We have to,” she said when asked about potential cameos.
The timing of the announcement comes as The Muppets prepare for their next outing, a Muppet Show revival for Disney+ led by Seth Rogen, with Sabrina Carpenter serving as both special guest and executive producer.
Created by Jim Henson in 1955, The Muppets made their television debut in 1969 on Sesame Street. The beloved franchise has been part of The Walt Disney Company since 2004.
Lawrence is currently promoting her upcoming film Die My Love, in which she stars alongside Robert Pattinson. The film is set to hit theatres this week. Emma Stone, on the other hand, is fresh off the release of Bugonia, helmed by Yorgos Lanthimos and also starring Jesse Plemons.
