After more than seven years away from the screen, Meghan Markle is set to return to acting with a cameo appearance in Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming comedy Close Personal Friends, as per a report on Variety. The film, which is currently shooting in Los Angeles, stars Lily Collins, Brie Larson, Jack Quaid, and Henry Golding.
Close Personal Friends reportedly follows a down-to-earth couple who meet a famous pair during a trip to Santa Barbara. As the two couples strike up a friendship, boundaries blur and awkward situations ensue, setting the stage for a sharp, character-driven comedy.
The ensemble cast also includes Saturday Night Live alum Melissa Villaseñor, What We Do in the Shadows star Natasia Demetriou, Anna Konkle, Patti Harrison, Jack Shalloo, and Dustin Demri-Burns.
Directed by Jason Orley, the film is based on a screenplay by Isaac Aptaker from a story he co-wrote with Orley. Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger are producing the project. The trio previously collaborated on the Amazon MGM romantic comedy I Want You Back.
Markle, best known for her role as Rachel Zane in Suits, previously appeared in Horrible Bosses and Remember Me before leaving Hollywood in 2018 following her marriage to Prince Harry. Since then, she has focused on producing content through the couple’s Archewell Productions banner, which renewed its first-look deal with Netflix earlier this year. The company has produced projects such as Live to Lead, Polo, and Markle’s own lifestyle series, With Love, Meghan, which premiered its second season this summer.
In 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back from their royal duties and have since divided their time between Santa Barbara and the U.K. With Close Personal Friends, Markle appears ready to revisit her Hollywood roots, this time, on her own terms.
