Gal Gadot and Matthias Schoenaerts are set to headline Ruin, a World War II-set thriller helmed by Mulan director Niki Caro. The film, written by Eternals scribes Kaz and Ryan Firpo, has been a long-awaited project since it topped Hollywood’s Black List back in 2017.
Set in post-war Germany, Ruin follows a former concentration camp prisoner (Gadot) who reluctantly teams up with a former German soldier (Schoenaerts). The pair form an unlikely alliance, united by a shared mission to hunt down and exact vengeance on a rogue Nazi SS death squad.
Marc Butan of MadRiver Pictures and Caro, along with Jaron Varsano and Gal Gadot, oversee production under their Pilot Wave Motion Pictures banner. The Firpo cousins, along with Gillian Hormel of Ludascripts and Mary Aloe of Aloe Entertainment, are on board as executive producers. Evan Powell will oversee the project on behalf of MadRiver.
Caro, whose filmography includes the Oscar-nominated Whale Rider and the Holocaust drama The Zookeeper’s Wife, brings her signature emotional depth and historical nuance to Ruin. She also previously directed North Country, starring Charlize Theron and Frances McDormand.
Gadot, who recently played the Evil Queen in Disney’s live-action Snow White and is currently filming The Runner for MGM Amazon, wrapped production last year on Julian Schnabel’s Hand of Dante. Schoenaerts, meanwhile, is busy with DC Studios’ Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and will soon appear in The Old Guard 2 for Netflix.
