“I read the first two episodes of the forthcoming HBO Harry Potter series, and they are SO, SO, SO GOOD!” she posted, calling the scripts a strong start for the rebooted adaptation of her iconic fantasy series.

From the beginning, HBO has emphasised Rowling’s creative involvement in the project. Network CEO Casey Bloys previously confirmed she played a key role in selecting showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, noting she was “very, very involved” in shaping the series, which will span seven seasons, one for each book.

Rowling’s participation in the show continues to spark debate. Since 2020, she has drawn criticism for repeatedly sharing views on gender identity that many see as transphobic. Despite the backlash, Bloys has reiterated that her personal beliefs will not influence the tone or content of the upcoming series. “Harry Potter is not secretly being infused with anything,” he said in a recent episode of The Town podcast. “Those are her personal, political views. She’s entitled to them.”

Rowling also addressed concerns about casting and political beliefs in May, following reports that actor Paapa Essiedu, cast as Severus Snape, had signed an open letter opposing a UK Supreme Court decision on legal recognition for transgender individuals. Responding to speculation about Essiedu’s involvement, Rowling wrote on X: “I don’t have the power to sack an actor from the series, and I wouldn’t exercise it if I did. I don’t believe in taking away people’s jobs or livelihoods because they hold legally protected beliefs that differ from mine.”

Joining Essiedu in the ensemble cast are Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout as Harry, Hermione, and Ron, respectively. John Lithgow will portray Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer takes on Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost will play Hagrid.

Production on the HBO Max series is slated to begin later this year, with a premiere expected in 2026.
