The abrupt ending of David Fincher’s series Mindhunter for Netflix left fans disappointed back in 2023, but it seems like the show is set for a revival. This is after Holt McCallany, who played FBI officer Bill Tench, confirmed that Fincher is thinking about reviving Mindhunter as a series of three films. McCallany told CBR that he recently met Fincher at his office, and the filmmaker told him about his plans to bring Mindhunter back as three two-hour films. However, the actor mentioned that whether the project would materialise depends on Fincher’s availability and motivation. Three years ago, Netflix cancelled Mindhunter reportedly because its viewership did not justify production cost and Fincher got busy with other projects for the streamer, such as Mank and Love, Death and Robots. Fincher remained committed to its unique, slow-burn, and psychologically intense style, which he acknowledged was not designed for mass consumption.
Mindhunter follows two FBI agents and a psychologist as they interview incarcerated serial killers to understand their psychology. Their groundbreaking work aims to develop criminal profiling techniques to solve ongoing violent crimes. Jonathan Groff also stars in the series as the other FBI agent, while Anna Torv plays the psychologist.
The lack of closure, particularly surrounding the BTK (Bind, Torture, Kill) Killer storyline, has been the biggest reason for fan disappointment with regard to Mindhunter. However, the news about its potential revival is sure to excite longtime Fincher fans and Mindhunter afficionados.
Meanwhile, Fincher is directing a film for Netflix that explores the next adventures of Cliff Booth from Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, based on Tarantino's screenplay. Brad Pitt reprises his role as Booth in the film, which also stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, and Carla Gugino.
