Paramount Pictures is setting up a major year at the box office in 2028, locking in release dates for two of its most recognisable franchises: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Sonic the Hedgehog.
The studio has confirmed that a new hybrid live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, produced by Neal H Moritz, will arrive in theatres on November 17, 2028. The project marks a major push to revive the Turtles in live action after plans stalled following the underwhelming response to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows in 2016. With Skydance now steering the studio’s direction, a full-scale reboot of the TMNT live-action franchise has been in development as Paramount revisits some of its most valuable IP.
This announcement follows the momentum surrounding the animated side of the property. Jeff Rowe’s sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, is already slated for September 17, 2027, continuing the success of the 2023 animated film.
On the heels of the Turtles news, Paramount also shared that the next chapter in the Sonic the Hedgehog film universe is set for a December 22, 2028, release. While story details remain tightly under wraps, the project comes from Original Film and SEGA Sammy Group, the same creative partners behind the hit franchise. The most recent entry, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, arrived last year with Ben Schwartz once again voicing the speedy blue hero and Jim Carrey returning in a double role.
Paramount rounded out its slate update with a nostalgic addition: the studio will re-release the 1986 classic Top Gun on May 13, 2026. Tony Scott’s original film, starring Tom Cruise, paved the way for the massive 2022 blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick and helped ignite development on a third instalment now in progress.
