Jamie Lee Curtis isn’t holding back when it comes to defending her latest film. The Oscar-winning actor recently took to Instagram to respond to a less-than-glowing review of Freakier Friday, the sequel to her 2003 hit Freaky Friday.
Time magazine had posted an excerpt from critic Stephanie Zacharek’s piece, which read: “No one, as far as we know, actually asked Disney for a sequel to 2003’s buoyant, surprisingly unsyrupy generation-gap comedy Freaky Friday.”
Curtis, clearly unimpressed, jumped into the comments with a playful but pointed reply: “SEEMS a TAD HARSH. SOME people LOVE it. Me being one.”
The film, which brings Curtis back as Tess Coleman alongside her original co-star Lindsay Lohan, picks up years after the first movie. This time, Anna (Lohan) is a mother herself to daughter Caden (Julia Butters) and is preparing to welcome a stepdaughter, Harper (Sophia Hammons), into the family. In true Freaky Friday fashion, chaos ensues when Tess, Anna, Caden, and Harper find themselves caught in a four-way body swap.
An excerpt from CE's review of the film reads, "Full credit to Nisha for erasing Asian stereotypes, and Freakier Friday feels like a deliberate attempt at rekindling magic once again, this time with a four-way body swap. Jamie Lee Curtis charms her way into our hearts by wearing baffling costumes one moment and instantly channelling her eccentricities in another. She holds the entire magic show of the sequel in her hands."
The ensemble also features Manny Jacinto, Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan. Nisha Ganatra directs from a script by Jordan Weiss, Elyse Hollander, and Mary Rodgers.
Freakier Friday is a sequel to the hit film inspired by Mary Rodgers’ novel. The original followed a mother and daughter who magically switched bodies and found deeper understanding in the process. This time, the magic returns with more complexity and a whole lot of heart.
