The trailer of Deepika Padukone’s Chhapaak was launched today. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the film tells the story of Malti (Deepika), a character inspired by acid attack survivor and activist Laxmi Agarwal.

Laxmi was 15 when she was attacked at a bus stop in Delhi for rejecting an older man’s advances. Following her recovery, she campaigned for stricter laws on the sale of acid and founded the non-profit Chhav Foundation.

The trailer opens with a protest scene in the aftermath of the Nirbhaya case. We are then introduced to Malti, who undergoes surgery after the attack and fights an inspiring legal battle against the crime. The police procedural scenes and detailed production design bear the mark of Meghna’s previous films Talvaar and Raazi. The trailer also features Vikrant Massey, as a character presumably based on social activist Alok Dixit.

Chhapaak went on floors in Delhi early this year and is scheduled for release on January 10. The film is co-produced by Deepika Padukone and Meghna Gulzar in association with Fox Star Studios.
