The trailer of Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga asks gentle questions of acceptions

The trailer of Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga starring Sonam Kapoor, Anil Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao was released on Thursday. The relationship drama film is written by Ghazal Dhaliwal and directed by Shelly Chopra Dhar.

The trailer opens with Rao, who plays a character named Sahir Mirza, introducing a play to an audience. As a caveat, he urges them to experience the story not with their minds but through their hearts. We then see a little girl, Sapna, growing up in a traditional Punjabi household with dreams of finding her perfect life partner one day. This girl grows up to be Sonam Kapoor, who shares a close and emotional bond with her father Balbir (played by Sonam’s real-life dad Anil Kapoor).

Balbir — who's under the impression that Sahir and Sapna are lovers — seems accepting of the Muslim boy, while Sapna’s brother suggests she marry his best friend. Another suitor, picked by Sapna’s grandmother through a matrimonial website, also enters the equation.

However, as the trailer builds to an emotional highpoint, it is soon revealed that Sapna is a closeted lesbian in love with a mysterious girl, who is kept silhouetted in the trailer. Would Sapna’s family learn to accept her for who is? And will Sapna, in return, forgive her father for his infidelity — as hinted through an exchange between Kapoor and Juhi Chawla? These are just a few questions the trailer leaves us mulling over.

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga is produced by Vidhu Chopra Films and distributed by Fox Star Studios. The film is scheduled to release on February 1, 2019.
