Earlier this Tuesday, director Ram Gopal Varma revealed through social media that his 2010 film Rakta Charitra will release again in theatres on July 17, Friday. Interestingly, the filmmaker only shared a Telugu poster for Rakta Charitra while making the announcement, hinting at a re-release in just the language and not in Hindi. The film will hit theatres again in the 4K Ultra HD format with Dolby Atmos sound.

Based on politician Paritala Ravindra's life, the Telugu-Hindi film stars Vivek Oberoi in the lead role. It also has actors Sudeep, Shatrughan Sinha, Abhimanyu Singh, Radhika Apte, and Suriya in a cameo (portions from the sequel).

The 2010 film tells the story of a man (Vivek Oberoi) who comes back from college to take revenge against those who killed his father, and then he becomes a politician. The story is connected to the second part, which hit theatres in the same year.

Rakta Charitra marked Ram Gopal Varma's return to form after a couple of films that failed at the box office. After his Sholay adaptation Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag, the filmmaker had commercial successes in Sarkar Raj and Phoonk, but he also had failures in Darling, Contract, Agyaat, and Rann. Most of the critics gave favourable reviews to the Vivek Oberoi starrer at the time.

Rakta Charitra 2 marked Suriya's debut in Hindi and Telugu cinema. Some of the portions in the film appear in the first part, although the sequel is regarded as his Telugu-Hindi debut. There is also a Tamil version of the film's sequel, titled Ratha Sarithiram.

Christopher Nolan's upcoming adaptation of Homer's Odyssey is also set for a July 17 release in theatres. Meanwhile, Ram Gopal Varma's upcoming films include Police Station Mein Bhoot, starring Manoj Bajpayee.
