A day after facing massive backlash on social media and other circles over the "hypersexualised" and "vulgar" portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor's character Achiyamma in Ram Charan's latest film Peddi, director Buchi Babu Sana has issued a public statement acknowledging audience concerns and apologising for any unintended discomfort caused.
In his statement, Buchi Babu Sana emphasised that cinema, in his view, should “entertain, inspire, and connect with audiences,” and should never make viewers feel “uncomfortable or disrespected.” He noted that the team had received significant feedback regarding certain scenes in Peddi and had taken it seriously.
He further clarified that there was never any intention to objectify or disrespect any female character in the film. "We have always had immense respect for women, both on and off screen," he stated, adding that if any part of the film has been perceived that way, the team respects those sentiments, understands the concerns, and sincerely apologises.
Following the criticism, the makers have also decided to make changes to the concerned portions of the film after reviewing audience reactions. The director noted that cinema evolves through its connection with audiences and that filmmakers have a responsibility to be mindful of changing perspectives and sensitivities.
He also reiterated that every woman "deserves to be respected, valued, and represented with dignity", and assured that the team remains committed to telling stories that celebrate strong characters and uphold those values.
Set against the backdrop of Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh, the story follows Peddi, a determined young man who dreams of bringing recognition to his village and its people. His journey takes him through different sporting disciplines, including cricket, wrestling, and para sports, as he battles numerous challenges to achieve his goal. Ram Charan shoulders the film with an intense and committed performance in the title role. Shivarajkumar plays Gourinaidu, a respected wrestling coach who trains aspiring wrestlers without expecting anything in return. Recognising Peddi's potential, he mentors him and helps him rise to the national level. Divyendu appears as Bujji.
On the technical team, Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has scored the music for the film.
