Young actor Chandra Hass is gearing up for the release of his upcoming film Barabar Premistha, directed by Sampath Rudra. The film, produced by G Chandu and Gayatri Chinny, is all set to hit the screens on February 6, Friday. However, ahead of its release, the film has found itself at the centre of an unexpected controversy.
At the pre-release event of Barabar Premistha, Chandra Hass performed a song live on stage. The song contained a few vulgar and unparliamentary words, which immediately sparked criticism and backlash. Several industry personalities and members of the audience were reportedly taken aback by the language used during the performance.
The event was attended by several notable personalities, including JD Chakravarthy, Jayanth C Paranjee, Aadi Saikumar, Chandra Hass’s father and well-known television actor Prabhakar, among others. Miss India finalist Meghna Mukherjee plays the female lead in the film, while Arjun Mahi, known for Ishtamga, essays the antagonist’s role.
Soon after the event, clips of Chandra Hass’s performance began circulating widely on social media. Many users expressed strong disapproval of the lyrics and the manner in which the actor delivered them on stage. The issue quickly escalated, drawing reactions from within the film fraternity as well.
Actor JD Chakravarthy, who attended the event as a guest, openly criticised the incident and issued a strong statement expressing his disappointment. He said he regretted not walking out of the event midway after witnessing the performance.
“I believe there is no need to stoop to degrading levels just to promote films. At a recent promotional event where I attended as a guest, I was left shocked and confused by what was happening on stage. I now regret not leaving the event midway. I strongly believe that filmmakers should attract audiences through creativity, not through vulgar presentations or offensive language that provoke disgust,” said JD Chakravarthy.
Following the backlash, Chandra Hass released a video statement addressing the controversy. In the video, he stated that he stood by the words he used during the performance and made it clear that he did not intend to apologise for them. He explained that he had been subjected to severe trolling and abuse on social media, and that the words used in the song were taken directly from comments and language used against him online.
According to Chandra Hass, he did not introduce any new abusive terms but merely reflected the harsh language he had encountered on social media platforms. He added that the video was meant to express his perspective and emotions rather than provoke anyone. The actor shared the lengthy video on his Instagram page, which further intensified the debate.
Meanwhile, the controversy took a legal turn when a police complaint was filed against Chandra Hass at the Madhapur police station. The complaint was lodged by an Executive Editor from Big TV, alleging that the actor had used unparliamentary language in a public event and that his subsequent video contained threatening remarks.
In the complaint, the editor claimed that Chandra Hass’s video response was intimidating in nature and warranted police intervention. The Madhapur police have registered the case and are currently investigating the matter.
As the issue continues to gain traction, voices from various fields have joined the criticism. Many have condemned the use of vulgar language on public platforms, especially during film promotional events attended by families and young audiences. Critics argue that such behaviour not only sets a poor example but also disrespects the Telugu language and cultural sensibilities.
Several netizens and public figures have stated that creative expression should not come at the cost of decency, and that Chandra Hass should take responsibility for his actions. A section of people have demanded a public apology, while others feel that the incident reflects a growing trend of shock value being used for publicity.
With Barabar Premistha set for release amid this controversy, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold and whether it will impact the film’s prospects at the box office. For now, Chandra Hass finds himself under intense scrutiny, with criticism pouring in from all corners.
Meanwhile, producer Chinny and director Sampath Rudra issued a statement expressing regret over the words used by actor Chandra Hass at the event. “We sincerely regret the language used by Chandra Hass during the function. He was only trying to explain his character from the film and chose to sing the song in that context. However, Barabar Premistha is a clean film and has received a U certificate. Those words are not part of the film. We regret the incident,” said Chinny and Sampath Rudra.
