After a staggering opening day at the ticket counters, Pawan Kalyan’s latest release They Call Him OG struggled to keep the momentum going on Saturday and Sunday. Directed by Sujeeth and produced by DVV Entertainment banner, OG also stars Priyanka Mohan, and Emraan Hashmi in prominent roles.
While it collected nearly 63 crore (nett) on day 1, OG’s collections on the weekend flatlined as the film managed to collect approximately 18 crore (nett) on both Saturday and Sunday, showing no signs of improvement or a strong word-of-mouth impact. Considering it garnered between 18-19 crore on Friday too, the film really needed to register a strong growth.
As of 1pm on Monday, the Pawan Kalyan starrer has managed to collect Rs 1.4 crore (nett), according to Sacnilk.com. The film’s Monday collections are likely to land in the range of 6-7 crores.
Now, the film’s chances now look bleak, of safely breaking even for all its distributors. OG’s theatrical rights were reportedly sold for a Rs 165 crore nett, which meant the film needs to cross the Rs 300 crore mark worldwide, in order to be considered a profitable venture for all the buyers.
By the end of Sunday, the film’s collections fall somewhere in range of Rs 225-235 crores at worldwide box office. And now with Kantara: Chapter 1 gearing up for a widescale release in Telugu market as well in 3 days, it remains to be seen how much OG can utilise its screen count domination for the next 3 days.
While many are placing the blame on producers for the high ticket prices as the reason for flat footfalls, the film’s A-rating certificate is also touted as a possible reason for the film struggling to bring in family audience, the bedrock for a long-run box office succes.
In our review for OG, we noted, “All the narrative origami could have been forgiven if the film winked at us, admitted its own pulpiness, and played to the gallery. Instead, it takes itself very seriously. And that’s what makes OG a big disappointment.”
