The Telugu film industry could face significant disruption starting June 1, as exhibitors from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have declared a complete shutdown of theatres. The move stems from long-standing dissatisfaction with the existing rental-based revenue model. At the first joint meeting held with the exhibitor association on Sunday, exhibitors expressed support for transitioning to a percentage-based model and agreed to formally issue a request and a bandh notice.

Around 60 exhibitors reportedly attended the meeting, including industry figures such as Dil Raju and Suresh Babu. However, several key distributors and producers were absent, suggesting internal disagreement over the proposal.

If the shutdown goes ahead, several major film releases could be impacted. Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life (Telugu dubbed and Tamil versions in Telugu states) and Pawan Kalyan’s Hari Hara Veera Mallu, releasing on June 12, may face distribution issues in single-screen theatres. Only multiplexes not affiliated with the exhibitors’ association may continue operations.

Exhibitors also raised concerns about films releasing on OTT platforms shortly after theatrical runs. They have requested that successful titles be withheld from digital platforms for a longer period.

A formal representation will be submitted to the Film Chamber, and further discussions are expected before the June 1 deadline in an effort to reach a resolution. More details are yet to be revealed.
