As Kalki 2898 AD completes one year since its theatrical release, director Nag Ashwin looked back on Deepika Padukone’s central performance and her now-celebrated fire-walk scene from the film’s climax.
In a recent reflection on the making of the sci-fi epic, Ashwin noted, “She is the most important part of the story… If you remove her character, there is no story. There is no Kalki.” The team had reportedly engaged in multiple discussions during the scripting stage and ultimately centred the film’s emotional arc around Deepika’s character.
A moment that stood out for audiences and crew alike was the fire-walk sequence. Recalling how it came together under tight time constraints, the director said, “We were shooting setups that day, and Deepika had to leave on a certain flight. When I saw her walking through that tunnel of fire, I just knew this was going to be special.”
Kalki 2898 AD, starring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, and Kamal Haasan, is set in a dystopian future where the elite live in a technologically advanced complex while the rest of humanity struggles to survive. Deepika’s character emerges as the narrative centre in a story of prophecy, rebellion, and mythic resurrection.
Produced by Vyjayanthi Movies, Kalki 2898 AD grossed over Rs 1000 crore globally. The team is currently working on the sequel, with Deepika expected to reprise her role as Sumati in the continuing saga.
