Nearly 20 years since its release, Athadu continues to hold a classic place in Telugu cinema for its sharp writing, stylish action, and family emotions. Starring Mahesh Babu and directed by Trivikram Srinivas, the 2005 film gained cult status post its theatrical run, especially through television broadcasts. As part of Mahesh Babu’s birthday celebrations, the film is set to be re-released in 4K resolution with Dolby Atmos sound on August 9.
At a press meet ahead of the re-release held on Saturday, producer and veteran actor Murali Mohan shared that any plans for a sequel would only proceed with both Mahesh Babu and Trivikram on board. “If a sequel is ever made, it will only be with Mahesh Babu gaaru and Trivikram gaaru,” he said. Responding to questions about rumours of Pawan Kalyan being approached for the original, Murali Mohan clarified that no such discussions took place.
Reflecting on the production, he recalled, “Athadu was released on August 10, 2005, and now it is making a comeback on August 9, 2025. Initially, we were hesitant about a re-release, but Priyanka (Jayabheri Arts) took the initiative. The film has been upgraded to meet today’s technology standards with the help of the Prasads Group.”
The team revealed that the climax was filmed over 28 days using imported cameras and praised Mahesh Babu for his consistent support throughout. Murali Mohan also noted that while the film’s theatrical performance was moderate, its success grew over time through satellite rights and television premieres.
Priyanka Duggirala added, “Back in 2005, films were shot on physical reels. For this re-release, we scanned the raw footage in 8K and restored it with modern post-production tools. Though Indian theatres don’t support 8K yet, we’re presenting the film in Super 4K with Dolby Atmos.”
With the re-release of Athadu, fans of Mahesh Babu and Telugu cinephiles are in for a treat as the film has strong nostalgic value for its evergreen music by Mani Sharma, the intense performances and the comedy scenes.
