Renowned Telugu producer Naga Vamsi, known for hits like Jersey and Lucky Baskhar, has addressed criticism over his alleged "disrespect" towards veteran Bollywood producer Boney Kapoor during a recent roundtable discussion hosted by Galatta Plus. The debate centered on the South Indian film industry's growing influence and its impact on Bollywood.
Trade analyst Sumit Kadel criticised Vamsi for his remarks, describing them as unnecessary and disrespectful. Kadel tweeted, “South Indian films have redefined Indian cinema with the Pan-India trend. However, disrespecting Boney Kapoor Ji was uncalled for. Many South filmmakers have openly acknowledged their admiration for Hindi cinema legends like Amitabh Bachchan and Yash Chopra. Arrogance leads to downfall, and this applies across industries.”
In a tweet defending himself, Vamsi replied, “You don’t need to teach us how to respect elders. We respect Boney Ji more than you guys do. There was no disrespect in that conversation. It was a healthy discussion. Me and Boney Ji had a nice laugh and hugged each other after the interview. So please don’t jump to conclusions based on what you saw.”
The heated discussion unfolded during a producers’ panel where Vamsi argued that the South Indian industry had reshaped Indian cinema. “We, South Indians, have changed the way Bollywood looks at cinema,” he said, referencing blockbusters like Baahubali, RRR, and Pushpa. Boney Kapoor countered citing Bollywood classics like Mughal-E-Azam as evidence of its longstanding influence.
Vamsi clarified that his remarks were part of a spirited exchange, not an attack. The incident has ignited a broader conversation about the evolving dynamics of Indian cinema and the growing global recognition of South Indian films.
