Venu Udugula, who rose to limelight with the film Virataparvam, recently tasted success with Raju Weds Rambai, a rural social drama that marks his debut as a producer. Virata Parvam was received very well for its social commentary. In a recent interview, the filmmaker spoke about filmmakers’ responsibility towards stories based in real events, and talked about why he doesn’t approve of a film like Razakar, a film based on 1948 Hyderabad revolution movement which released last year.
Talking to Gulte, Venu Udugula said about Razakar, “It was not all based in reality. You must remember that Razakar is produced by a BJP party member. It was made entirely with a political agenda. It was not done with respect or responsibility towards our history.”
Venu added that while he respects the producer-director team of Razakar, he has plenty of objections to the content of their film. He explained, “It was entirely done with an agenda, how they implicated that all of the Razakars were Muslims. Stories like this should be done with transparency, after talking to historians. It’s not some ancient history, it’s very easy to research. There are many well researched books about this topic. Truth should be told truthfully, not with an agenda. It would have been an asset, if it was made with a humane perspective."
The key cast members of Razakar include Vedhika, Anasuya, Raj Arjun, Bobby Simha and Makarand Deshpande. Produced by Gudur Narayan Reddy under the Samarveer Creations banner, the film claimed to capture the untold story of the struggles of Andhra Pradesh and its people in the early days of Independence to reclaim their religion and identity in the face of military and political oppression.
Earlier this year, Razakar was conferred with the Best Film on History award at the recently-held Telangana Gaddar Film Awards.
