Malayalam actor Swasika has revealed that she recently declined an offer to play Telugu actor Ram Charan’s mother in the upcoming pan-Indian biggie Peddi. The actor, who has lately been juggling projects across industries, said that while she is being flooded with mother roles, she was not ready to take up such a part alongside Ram Charan at this stage.
“I keep getting mother roles one after the other. What shocked me was when I was asked to play Ram Charan’s mother. It was for Peddi, a big Telugu film being made on a massive budget. I said no. I don’t know how it would turn out if I had done it, but at this point, I don’t feel the need to play Ram Charan’s mother. So, I said no. If such a time comes in the future, I may consider it,” Swasika said in a recent media interaction.
Directed by Buchi Babu Sana, Peddi stars Janhvi Kapoor as the female lead opposite Ram Charan. The film, billed as a sports action drama, is produced by Vriddhi Cinemas and has music by AR Rahman. Veteran Kannada actor Shiva Rajkumar will also be seen in a pivotal role.
Swasika, meanwhile, has been actively building her career outside Malayalam cinema. She won attention last year in Tamil with the hit film Lubber Pandhu, in which she played the mother of the female lead, a role that drew praise from critics and audiences alike. She was also part of Suriya-Karthik Subbaraj’s Retro and Soori-Aishwarya Lekshmi's Maaman, and earlier this year marked her Telugu debut with Thammudu. Going forward, she will be featured in Suriya’s upcoming film Karuppu.
Having made her acting debut in Tamil back in 2009 with Vaigai, Swasika later moved into Malayalam films, initially with smaller roles. She became a household name in Kerala through the hugely popular television soap Chinthavishtayaya Seetha, in which she played the titular character. The show, which ran across three seasons between 2016 and 2022, aired on both Asianet and Flowers TV and clocked more than 900 episodes in total.
Alongside her television work, Swasika also appeared in a string of Malayalam films and delivered a standout performance in the indie film Vasanthi, which earned her the Kerala State Film Award for Best Character Actress in 2019.
