Sudheer Babu‘s upcoming film Maa Nanna Super Hero is coming to the screens on October 11. The film is directed by Abhilash Kankara in his feature debut. Sudheer Babu interacts with CE about the film’s core conflict and theme of fatherhood, his upcoming pan-India project Jatadhara, and Mahesh Babu’s reaction to the Maa Nanna Super Hero trailer, among other things.
Sudheer Babu, who is the brother-in-law of Mahesh Babu, says with delight that Mahesh expressed more than usual for this film’s trailer. Mahesh’s message after watching the trailer reads, “Loved it. Especially the last dialogue." Adding on, Sudheer says, "He added many emojis in the message. He generally says one or two words whenever I send him something. But for this film, he was very expressive. I loved seeing his message like that.”
Talking about what appealed to him in the film's story, Sudheer said, “The film’s conflict point is interesting. I feel this is very new. It’s like a triangular love story between a son and two fathers; the one who raised him and his birth father. The boy is obsessed with the man who raised him and hates his birth father. But in order to protect his present father he has to deal with the one from his past. It felt like such an interesting lock in the screenplay. I loved Abhilash’s approach in the film.”
Further talking about the film’s unique subject and how it differs from other father-son based films, he elaborates, “In a film like Animal too there was an obsession with father but in a macho, larger-than-life way. But here, it’s very subtle and grounded. There’s no fight scene or an unnecessary love track deviating from the core emotion. You’ll have a gentle smile on your face throughout the film.”
Maa Nanna Super Hero is directed by Abhilash Kankara, who gained recognition for his web series Loser, starring Priyadarshi. Talking about the director’s work style, Sudheer Babu mentions, “Abhilash is a clear filmmaker. He always comes to set with his homework. Especially, I have seen debut directors and with all the pressure on their shoulders, they tend to get messy and stressed out. But Abhilash was always on point, sharp and attentive. His clarity made everything smooth for us. And I love the fact that his set is very silent, similar to Mohana Krishna Indraganti’s set. I felt similar peace during the shoot days of Sammohanam.”
Addressing that his previous outing, Harom Hara, an intense action film, failed to meet expectations, he opened up, saying, “I loved the film’s idea. I always wanted to do action. And as an actor, I feel we should do everything. I should be able to pull off a film like Harom Hara and again, a film like Maa Nanna Super Hero.
Further adding about the work he did for this role, he said, “I am in a space where I can mindfully focus and get into the skin of a character. In this film, for the emotional scenes, I put my phone away, stayed at a distance with loved ones and got into a mindful space. That helps a lot in bringing freshness to these subtle roles.”
Finally, Sudheer talks about the significance of Maa Nanna Super Hero in his filmography. "It is a special film. I am confident everyone who watches this film will be positive about it right from the first day, first show. You will leave this film with a positive vibe."
About his future works, he shares, “My next is Jatadhara, a pan-India project. The shoot is going to start in November. That film is another interesting idea, a blending of science fiction and mythology.”
