Karthik Subbaraj's latest directorial, Dorothy, has maintained an upward trajectory through its opening weekend, with the film registering its highest single-day collection on Sunday. The film has seen its earnings increase with each passing day since its theatrical release, while its occupancy also climbed steadily over the weekend.
Dorothy has grossed Rs 4.15 crore worldwide in its first three days, all of which has come from the Indian market, with no overseas gross reported. Its India net collection stands at Rs 3.55 crore. The film recorded a gross of Rs 1.65 crore on Day 3, Sunday, from 778 shows, with an overall occupancy of 46%.
Tamil Nadu continues to account for the bulk of the film's theatrical business. The state contributed Rs 1.30 crore to Sunday's gross, while Karnataka brought in Rs 20 lakh, Kerala Rs 10 lakh and the rest of India Rs 5 lakh. With Sunday's numbers, Dorothy's Tamil Nadu gross has reached Rs 3.37 crore across its opening weekend.
The film has also shown consistent growth since its release. After opening with Rs 1.05 crore gross on Friday, Dorothy rose to Rs 1.45 crore on Saturday before recording Rs 1.65 crore on Sunday. Its occupancy similarly improved from 33% on Day 1 to 41% on Saturday and 46% on Sunday.
In comparison, Hiphop Tamizha Adhi's Meesaya Murukku 2 recorded a substantially bigger opening weekend, earning Rs 6.05 crore net on its third day and reaching Rs 13.95 crore in three-day India net collections, according to Sacnilk figures. Nani-starrer The Paradise, which released a day earlier and across multiple languages, was on an altogether larger scale, recording Rs 15.25 crore in India net on its third day and taking its India net total to Rs 76.40 crore.
There has been a mixed response to the film from general audiences, but it has received universal critical acclaim. Its story follows two friends, played by Sananth and Rishikanth, who have grown up with toxic masculinity, casteism, and violence around them. However, the friends' belief system and lives change as a compassionate Dorothy (Keerthy Suresh) challenges the societal prejudice surrounding them.
Dorothy has music by Ilaiyaraaja, who makes his first collaboration with director Karthik Subbaraj for a film. It also marks Ilaiyaraaja's 1,540th film as a music director. The film is produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Guneet Monga Kapoor, and Achin Jain. Its technical team also includes cinematographer S Thirunavukkarasu, editor Ganesh Siva, and choreographer Sherif M.
