Finding a partner can be complicated enough, but what if the person you fall in love with comes with one very unusual condition? That is the question at the centre of Ram And Leela, which initially presents itself as a romantic comedy before gradually opening the door to a much stranger world.
The film follows Ram, a 30-year-old man who has faced 50 marriage rejections while looking for a partner. His fortunes change when he meets Leela during a local train journey. She agrees to marry him, but there is one catch: he must never see her after 6 pm. What begins as a quirky rule becomes the mystery that drives the rest of the story.
For those who missed the film in theatres, Rio Raj and Vartika-starrer Ram And Leela is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on September 18. The film, which hit theatres on August 21, marks the directorial debut of Ramachandrran Kannan and Vartika's acting debut.
The film's unusual premise was also part of its theatrical appeal. The makers deliberately kept a major element of the story away from the promotional material, with the romance eventually taking a science-fiction turn. The film had earlier undergone a last-minute title change. It was initially announced as Ram in Leela before being renamed Ram And Leela ahead of its August 21 theatrical release. It also cleared censorship with a U/A certificate.
An excerpt from CE's review of the film reads, "The inventiveness of the idea doesn’t find its way into the narrative, and we are left trying to find a nugget of comedy that might be buried under the heap of nothingness."
Directed by Ramachandrran Kannan, the film also stars Chetan, Munishkanth, Malavika Avinash, Deepa Venkat and Ma Ka Pa Anand among the supporting cast. Ankit Menon has composed the music, while Mallikarjun and YNC Shiva have handled cinematography and editing, respectively.
