Sandakari, Vemal's long-delayed film co-starring Shriya Saran, is finally set to see the light of day. The film's makers announced the release date on Monday, on the occasion of Ganesh Chathurthi.

The film is a remake of Jeethu Joseph’s 2012 Malayalam film, My Boss, starring Dileep and Mamta Mohandas. R Madhesh of Madhurey fame is the director of the film. Back in 2019, when the film was initially set for release, the director told CE that he had made a few changes to the original script to suit Tamil sensibilities.

Sandakari, also starring Prabhu and Sathyan in important roles, is said to be a full-length comedy. The film has been shot across locations like New York, Venice and London, internationally, and Goa and Kochi within India. On the technical front, the film will feature music by Amresh, camera work by RB Gurudhev and editing by Dinesh. Punnagai Poo Geetha is producing the film, which is slated for release on September 18.

While the film's release has been in limbo for years, it made headlines earlier this year when the Tamil Nadu State Film Awards were announced. The unreleased film won three awards, namely, Best Film (Third Prize), while Amrish and Iyyappan won Best Playback Singer (Male) and Best Art Director, sparking debate about how a film can receive awards before its theatrical release.

The original, My Boss, set in the backdrop of the IT industry, follows an executive assistant in a leading firm, who aspires to migrate to a foreign country, while his female boss, an Indian-born Australian citizen, has visa problems at a time when she has the opportunity to get a promotion. This pushes the heroine to enter into a marriage of convenience with the hero in a frantic attempt to stay in India. My Boss, interestingly, was an unofficial adaptation of the 2009 Hollywood film, The Proposal, which had Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds as the leads.
