The passing of noted scholar, professor, and orator Solomon Pappaiah at the age of 90 marked the end of an era for Tamil literary discourse. Born in Sathangudi near Madurai in 1936, Solomon earned bachelors and masters degrees from Madurai American College and Thiagarajar College, respectively, before joining The American College as a Tamil lecturer in 1961. Eventually, he ended his stint with The American College as Head of Department in 1994.
Solomon Pappaiah popularised the art of Pattimandram (debate), taking Tamil literature to millions through television broadcasts. He is also known for his witty commentary on Thirukkural, Kamba Ramayanam, Agananooru, and Puranaanooru.
Honored with the Kalaimaamani award in 2000 and the Padma Shri in 2021, Solomon also starred in multiple films, most notably 2007's Sivaji with Shankar and Rajinikanth. Following his passing, both Rajinikanth and Shankar paid their tributes to him. In an interview with The Hindu, Solomon said that, after Sivaji, he received offers to star in and said no to over 200 films, as he did not feel he belonged in cinema. Even those who have not acted with him paid homage to the multihyphenate, including Kamal Haasan, who is known for his affinity for the Tamil language.
Following his demise at his Madurai residence, CP Radhakrishnan, the Vice President of India, expressed deep grief over the loss of the legendary cultural icon. He wrote, "Deeply saddened by the passing of Prof. Solomon Pappaiah, a towering Tamil scholar whose eloquence and wisdom enriched our literary and cultural heritage. With rare grace and profound learning, he brought the beauty of Tamil literature into the hearts of millions and elevated the timeless tradition of Pattimandram. His scholarship, wit and oratory made Tamil’s timeless wisdom accessible to generations. My heartfelt condolences to his family, admirers and the Tamil fraternity."
