For decades, Tamil cinema's biggest stars have often found themselves at the centre of conversations about rivalry, fandom and one-upmanship. At Silverstone, however, the spotlight shifted from cinema to something neither Ajith Kumar nor Vijay has traditionally been associated with in quite the same way — representing Tamil Nadu on an international sporting stage.
Ajith has increasingly treated motorsport as more than an off-screen passion. His return to professional racing has seen him compete internationally while also speaking about the need for better infrastructure and opportunities for young Indian racers. Vijay, meanwhile, has recently placed motorsport among the sporting disciplines that Tamil Nadu should invest in, with plans for dedicated infrastructure in the state.
That convergence took another step at Silverstone, where Ajith thanked Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay for taking time out of his UK visit to attend the Michelin Le Mans Cup round. In a video message, Ajith expressed gratitude to Vijay for supporting the Indian contingent at the event and said the Chief Minister's presence could help give motorsport greater visibility in the country.
Ajith also looked beyond the weekend's race. Referring to the Tamil Nadu government's plans to develop motorsport infrastructure, he expressed hope that India could eventually host a round of the Le Mans Cup. In a video now being shared online, he can be seen thanking Vijay for giving sports, including motorsport, the attention it needs and adapted Neil Armstrong's famous words to describe the development as “one small step by the Tamil Nadu government, one giant leap for motorsports in India.”
Vijay's presence at Silverstone comes during his first overseas visit as Chief Minister. He will attend the fifth round of the 2026 Michelin Le Mans Cup as a special guest and will wave the green flag for the race, while also supporting the Indian drivers competing over the weekend.
Ajith is competing in the LMP3 Pro/Am category for Ajith RedAnt by Virage alongside French driver Romain Vozniak. The weekend also features an all-Indian LMP3 pairing of former Formula 1 driver Narain Karthikeyan and Aditya Patel. The Silverstone round is the fifth event of this year's Le Mans Cup championship.
The actor had earlier welcomed Vijay's announcement of a dedicated motorsport city in Tamil Nadu, saying such initiatives could help draw youngsters towards sport, identify talent and create opportunities to develop professional racers. Vijay has also announced plans for an Olympic city, with the proposed motorsport facilities aimed at strengthening the state's sporting ecosystem.
