Earlier this Friday, we reported about the passing of scholar and television debate moderator Solomon Pappaiah. Known as one of the greatest scholars in Tamil, he was aged 90 at the time of death. Beyond his work in television and as a scholar, Solomon also appeared in some films, most notably Sivaji: The Boss, directed by Shankar and starring Rajinikanth.
Reminiscing about him, Shankar wrote, "Feeling deeply saddened to hear about the demise of respected Solomon Pappaiah Avargal. What a great Tamil scholar and orator he was! I always looked forward to and thoroughly enjoyed his Pattimandram programmes during every Tamil festival." The filmmaker added, "It is truly heartbreaking to know that I will miss his wonderful humour, wit, and enlightening judgments. His contribution to Tamil language and culture will always be remembered. My heartfelt prayers for the beautiful soul. May he rest in peace."
Besides Sivaji, Solomon Pappaiah appeared in Shankar's 2003 film Boys, starring Siddhart, Genelia, Bharath, S Thaman, Manikandan, and Nakkhul.
Meanwhile, Rajinikanth condoled his co-star's demise and wrote, "I pray to God that the soul of the great Tamil personality, Professor Solomon Pappaiya, may rest in peace. He was instrumental in taking the Pattimandram (Tamil debate forum), which had traditionally been conducted at a literary level among the educated, to the common people and making it widely popular among the masses.."
In an old stage event, Solomon praised Rajinikanth's personality, highlighting his love, humility, and discipline. "More than the fact that I starred in this film, it is a bigger deal that I learnt from him," he said regarding his Sivaji co-actor back then.
At the same time, actor-choreographer-director Prabhudheva shared, "Deeply saddened by the passing of Solomon Pappayya Sir. A great voice of Tamil, forever remembered."
