A week after the OTT premiere of Dorothy, starring Rishikanth and Sananth in lead roles, the film's director Karthik Subbaraj is continuing the conversation on the film through interviews, public discussions and more. In one such interview, the filmmaker has now revealed that the original climax he had in mind for the film does not end with the controversial kiss scene.
For the unversed, Dorothy tells the story of Karthi (Rishikanth) and Subbu (Sananth), two childhood friends who grow up in an unforgiving landscape defined by caste divides, family honour, and toxic masculinity. Eventually, we see Subbu coming out as a trans woman, and the problems that follow. The film ends with Karthi not only accepting Subbu's identity but also falling in love with her and kissing her.
Speaking to Fully Filmy, Karthik has now revealed that originally the film didn't end with the kiss. "The story then returns to Madurai, where wedding preparations for Karthi and Dorothy are underway with the couple's close ones. Suddenly, Whistle Veeraya and his gang arrive with the intention of killing them. But on seeing Dorothy (Subbu) in her wedding attire, Veeraya is reminded of his mother and tries to stop his brothers," he explained.
The conflict, however, does not end there. "The brothers, however, opine that even if they can accept Subbu as Dorothy, how can she marry Karthi, who is from another caste? They then turn against Karthi and try to kill him when Dorothy steps in and takes them on in a Bruce Lee-style martial arts sequence." However, the filmmaker eventually decided to end the film with the kiss.
While Dorothy has been receiving positive reviews overall, its climax has triggered conflicting opinions. Some audience members questioned the premise of a heterosexual man falling in love with a trans woman, while others felt the screenplay fell short in convincingly charting a homophobic man's journey towards acceptance and love.
