Rajinikanth’s recent film Jailer 2 continues its dream run at the box office. On the seventh day of its release, director Nelson's film earned around 42 crore from theatres, according to data from the tracker Sacnilk. This takes the overall Jailer 2 box office collection to 582.45 crore worldwide. On Wednesday, the film’s producer Kalanithi Maran’s banner, Sun Pictures, described it as an “industry blockbuster”. Speaking of which, the Jailer sequel is on course to becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film of all time soon. According to reports, the record now belongs to Rajinikanth's own 2.0 (2018), which has a worldwide box office collection of around 700 crore.
In all likelihood, Jailer 2 will break the longstanding record of 2.0, thus becoming the new industry hit in Tamil cinema. Meanwhile, the audience and the industry are looking forward to seeing whether it will become the first Tamil film to gross more than 1000 crore at the global box office. Reportedly, the film's box office collection is just behind that of 2023’s Jailer, to which it serves as a sequel, and the same year's Vijay starrer Leo.
While Leo sits second on the list of the highest-grossing Tamil films of all time with an approximate box office collection of about 620 crore, Jailer comes third on the list with a gross collection of about 605 crore. It is worth noting that these are estimates and not exact box office figures and that the actual numbers may vary to an extent. In 2023, Leo edged past Jailer’s global box office collection to briefly hold the highest-grosser record for a Tamil film.
Besides Rajinikanth, the film stars SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, and Suraj Venjaramoodu, alongside returning actors such as Ramya Krishnan, Mirnaa, Yogi Babu, and Mohanlal. It also has a special appearance from Hrithik Roshan.
