The Nayanthara starrer Mookuthi Amman 2, directed by Sundar C, opened in theatres on November 06 to mostly negative reviews from critics and audiences. Viewers criticised the lack of coherence in the screenplay and the visual effects in the film, calling these 'a cheap imitation' of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Meanwhile, Suriya's Scene, directed by Jithu Madhavan, has opened to mostly positive reviews from audiences and critics. The feedback seems to be having an effect on the box office performance of both films.
While Scene has earned earned more than 80 crore from theatres worldwide, according to Sacnilk data, the latest Mookuthi Amman 2 box office collection stands at only 6.76 crore in India. Even on Saturday, the first of the two weekend days, the film only earned 2.85 crore. So far this Sunday, it has minted 1.76 crore from theatres in India. The film faces stiff competition from Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana as well. Starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita, and Yash as Demon King Raavan, the film has earned more than 250 crore from theatres in India alone so far.
The relatively low Mookuthi Amman 2 box office collection is noteworthy, especially considering the fact that Amman films in Tamil have seen a major boost with the release of Suriya's Karuppu. Director-actor RJ Balaji's film, starring Suriya in the lead role, has earned more than 300 crore from theatres worldwide, despite negative critical reviews, showing the endurance of both the star and the Amman genre. However, the latest instalment in the Mookuthi Amman franchise is yet to show signs of capitalising on the popularity of the genre in a big way. It remains to be seen how the film will fare at the box office in the coming days, considering the fact that it is the Diwali season.
