In the rush to celebrate milestones on the global stage, the contributions of those who came before can sometimes be overlooked. A recent announcement involving a Tamil actor has now brought one such overlooked chapter of Indian television history back into focus.
Actor Vijay Sethupathi is set to be one of the presenters at the 54th International Emmy Awards, scheduled to take place in New York on November 23. Following the announcement, several reports described him as the first Indian to present an award at the prestigious ceremony. However, actor Prerna Wanvari has contested this claim, pointing out that Indian television personalities had represented the country at the event well before him.
Taking to her Instagram handle, Wanvari called out a report making the claim, writing, "You got this so wrong! And before me were two iconic women @aashkagoradia and @realsimonesingh who were first to present at The International Emmys in 2009 and 2010." She also shared a photograph of herself presenting an award at the ceremony in 2012, highlighting that she, too, had been part of the event.
In a subsequent statement to Indian Television Dot Com, Wanvari questioned the research behind the reports and the publicity surrounding Sethupathi's appearance. She argued that the actor's participation was certainly worth celebrating, but declaring him the first Indian presenter without acknowledging earlier appearances was inaccurate. She also pointed out that Indian television female actors had been part of the international awards ceremony long before the latest announcement, adding that their contributions should not be erased from the record.
According to Wanvari, Simone Singh presented at the International Emmy Awards in 2003, while Aashka Goradia was among the Indian presenters in 2009. Wanvari herself presented the Arts Programming award at the 40th International Emmy Awards in 2012.
Sethupathi's participation was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter India, which identified him as the first Indian to present at the International Emmys. The 54th International Emmy Awards will also see India compete in two categories. SonyLIV's Real Kashmir Football Club has been nominated for Best Drama Series, while Vir Das' Netflix special Fool Volume is in contention for Best Comedy Series.
