In a meeting held in Chennai on Saturday, several leading stakeholders of the Tamil film industry came together to discuss measures aimed at safeguarding the sector’s interests. The discussion, organised under the leadership of GKM Tamil Kumaran, president of the Tamil Film Producers Council, saw the participation of producers, distributors, theatre owners, and office-bearers from multiple industry associations.
One of the key outcomes of the meeting was the decision to establish a Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising producers, distributors, and theatre owners. The committee will focus on streamlining the process of theatrical releases and regulating the timing of OTT premieres. Industry members present at the meeting unanimously agreed that the decisions taken by this committee should be adhered to by those working in the Tamil film sector.
The gathering was attended by several prominent producers and association representatives, including TG Thyagarajan, president of the Tamil Film Active Producers Association; its secretary T Siva; and treasurer Dhananjayan. Also present were producers RB Choudary, Ishari K Ganesh, Chandraprakash Jain, AL Azhagappan, Pyramid Natarajan, AM Rathnam, and Mukesh Mehta, among others.
Representatives from the exhibition and distribution sectors also took part in the discussions. Tiruppur Subramaniam, president of the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association, attended along with secretary Rohini Panneerselvam and other executives. Members of the Tamil Nadu Film Distributors Association, led by its president Arulpathy, were also present.
Another resolution passed during the meeting addressed commitments between artistes and producers. Participants agreed that when actors, directors, or leading technicians accept an advance from a producer, they must prioritise completing that particular film before taking up other commitments.
The meeting also discussed the growing overlap between cinema and digital platforms. As part of the resolutions, it was proposed that actors, actresses, directors, and key technicians working on films should refrain from participating in web series projects. If they chose to do so, they would be expected to comply with any decisions taken by the Joint Action Committee regarding their involvement in film projects.
The meeting concluded with industry representatives expressing the need for coordinated action among different sectors of the Tamil film ecosystem to ensure smoother production and release processes.
