As the Indian film industry mourns the loss of filmmaker, actor and writer K Bhagyaraj, producer Boney Kapoor and actor Anil Kapoor remembered the veteran filmmaker with heartfelt tributes, reflecting on both his creative brilliance and personal impact.

Bhagyaraj passed away in Chennai on June 27 following a cardiac arrest at the age of 73. Known for redefining middle-class storytelling in Tamil cinema with his wit, emotional depth and unconventional narratives, he leaves behind a legacy that transcended languages and generations.

In an emotional post on X, Boney Kapoor said he was “deeply saddened” by Bhagyaraj’s passing, adding that Indian cinema had lost “one of its finest storytellers” while he had lost “a dear friend”.

Calling Bhagyaraj “a true genius”, Boney wrote that the filmmaker redefined storytelling with his exceptional creativity, wit and deep understanding of human emotions. He highlighted how films such as Mouna Geethangal, Thooral Ninnu Pochchu, Oru Kaidhiyin Diary, Andha 7 Naatkal and Enga Chinna Rasa — along with their Hindi remakes including Ek Hi Bhool, Woh Saat Din, Mohabbat and Beta — entertained millions while leaving a lasting impact on Indian cinema.

Beyond his work, Boney said he would always cherish Bhagyaraj’s warmth, generosity and the moments they shared. “You may no longer be with us, but your films, your legacy, and the lives you touched will continue to live on forever,” he wrote.

Actor Anil Kapoor, meanwhile, shared a longer note recalling not just Bhagyaraj’s influence on Indian cinema but also the personal significance of his work in his own career. Anil said the news felt especially unreal because he had recently met Bhagyaraj at Khushbu’s daughter’s wedding and spent time with him.

Describing Bhagyaraj as “a creative genius whose contributions to Indian cinema go far beyond what many people know”, Anil emphasised that the filmmaker was the original creator behind stories that later became landmark Hindi films and career-defining moments for many.

Reflecting on their cinematic association, Anil noted that Woh Saat Din, adapted from Bhagyaraj’s work, became one of the most important films of his career. He also recalled that Mohabbat, which carried Bhagyaraj’s story, screenplay and dialogues, became a memorable film and played a role in launching producers Indra Kumar and Ashok Thakeria under Maruti International.

Anil further revisited Beta, another adaptation of Bhagyaraj’s writing, and shared that he and Boney Kapoor had acquired the rights before passing them on to Indra Kumar and Ashok Thakeria during a difficult phase in their journey. The film eventually emerged as a blockbuster and became one of the defining films of its era.

He also pointed to Mujhse Shaadi Karogi as another example of Bhagyaraj’s brilliance, noting that the filmmaker’s story and screenplay formed the foundation of the Hindi hit later adapted by Anees Bazmee. “The seeds of all these successes were planted by Bhagyaraj sir,” Anil wrote, adding that while the stories were adapted for Hindi audiences, “the true creator was always him.”

Anil concluded by saying Bhagyaraj’s writing touched countless lives and careers, including his own, and that despite not always receiving the recognition he deserved, his legacy would continue through the stories he created and the generations he inspired. “Rest in peace, Bhagyaraj sir. He will be deeply missed.”

K Bhagyaraj's final rites are to take place on Sunday in Chennai.
