Fans of actor-turned-chief minister Vijay are hopeful for their star's final film, Jana Nayagan, to open in theatres this June. While the release of the H Vinoth directorial is still hanging in the balance, fans of the actor have another film opening in theatres to celebrate him.
Atlee's Mersal, featuring Vijay in three roles as a father and two sons, is all set to hit theatres on June 19. The re-release is planned to open in theatres to mark the birthday of the actor-politician, which falls on June 22. However, the re-release will happen only in theatres across Chennai and Chengalpattu.
The film follows Vijay's Maaran, a respected doctor who charges patients only a nominal fee but secretly leads a double life as a vigilante magician fighting medical crimes. When he is arrested, his hidden past comes to light.
Vijay stars alongside Samantha Ruth Prabhu, SJ Suryah, Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen, Vadivelu, Hareesh Peradi, Kovai Sarala, Sathyan and Sathyaraj in Mersal. The film marked Vijay's second collaboration with Atlee after Theri. They collaborated one more time after Mersal for Bigil.
Mersal is produced by Thenandal Studio Limited, in the studio's hundredth film production. On the technical front, the film features music by AR Rahman, cinematography by GK Vishnu and editing by Ruben.
The film opened in theatres on 18 October 2017, marking the Diwali festival. It opened to largely positive reviews from critics with criticism for excessive length and a cliched plotline. It earned nearly Rs 200 crore at the box office.
