The leak of Vijay's Jana Nayagan ahead of its theatrical release emerged as one of the biggest setbacks for the makers, with pirated versions of the film spreading rapidly across social media despite action from the cybercrime police. While those responsible for the initial leak were arrested, editor Pradeep E Ragav believes the larger challenge lies in stopping the countless users who continue to circulate pirated copies online.
For the unversed, On April 9, Jana Nayagan, helmed by H Vinoth leaked in its entirety on various illegal pirated sites, causing distress to the makers. Speaking about the incident in an interview with Harish Ram, Pradeep compared such users to "fire ants" that swarm and consume their prey, saying they hide behind anonymous social media accounts, making it nearly impossible to identify or punish them.
"If it had been something that belonged to them, they would never have done this. They think it's someone else's money, someone else's film. But beyond the money, there are a thousand people who worked hard on that film, and there are families depending on it. During this whole episode, everyone who had worked on the film was devastated. They kept saying, 'This is the film that fed us. This is our film.' The people who leaked the film were caught and are now in jail, but what about the people who spread it? Nobody can do anything to them."
Calling for stronger anti-piracy measures on social media platforms, Pradeep said, "I really wish platforms like Instagram or X introduced a feature where, if a film has been identified as leaked or pirated, it simply cannot be uploaded. YouTube already has Content ID, which can immediately block copyrighted content from being uploaded. On Instagram or X, anti-piracy teams can only report or strike posts after they're uploaded. I wish there was a system that prevented the upload itself."
Describing the spread of piracy as "like a virus," he added, "Once it appears, all you can do is reduce how much it spreads—you can't stop it from emerging in the first place. The people who actually leaked the film were traced with the help I provided to the cybercrime police, and they were arrested. But what do you do about the people who keep sharing it? They're spread all over the world. There isn't really any law that can effectively deal with them. It was an incredibly painful experience."
