After actor-politician Vijay's last film, Jana Nayagan, did not release as planned due to censorship delay, producer Kalaipuli Thanu announced that he plans to re-release on January 15, but moved it to January 23 due to requests from theatre owners, producers, and makers of films releasing on the Pongal holidays.
Uncertainty lingers over the 2016 film's re-release as the producer, in response to filmmaker Mohan G's request, said a decision on when to re-release it will be made on Monday. On his X handle, Mohan G, who is planning to release his upcoming historical drama Draupathi 2 on January 23, wrote to Kalaipuli Thanu to consider rescheduling the re-release of Theri to support an 'upcoming team' like theirs so that they may get a release in 'main screens' for a 'grand release'.
In response to Mohan G's request, Kalaipuli Thanu wrote that his banner V Creations encourages new filmmakers, emerging producers, and good films. He further wrote that in line with their banner's mission, a decision on Theri's re-release will be made on Monday (January 19).
Draupathi 2, meanwhile, which reunites Mohan G and Richard Rishi after Draupathi (2020) and Rudra Thandavam (2021), was initially set to make its theatrical debut on January 15. To get a bigger release, the film moved to January 23.
After their successful maiden collaboration in Theri, Atlee teamed up with Vijay in Mersal (2017) and Bigil (2019). Similar to Theri's result, Mersal and Bigil also turned out to be blockbusters at the box office. The film also starred Samantha, Amy Jackson, late filmmaker Mahendran, and Radikaa Sarathkumar.
