Karthi's long-awaited film Vaa Vaathiyaar, directed by Nalan Kumarasamy, hit theatres earlier today. The first reviews suggest that Nalan and Karthi have lived up to the promise of an entertaining film with superhero and fantasy elements. At a recent event, Karthi said that he found it challenging to portray an alter ego in Vaa Vaathiyaar and that the film pays tribute to masala cinema of the 1980s and 90s periods. Early reviews say that the makers have succeeded in capturing the vintage-era spirit, with some praising Karthi's role that is hitherto unprecedented in his career. Netizens reserved special praise for the elements in the film that serve as a throwback to legendary actor MG Ramachandran. While many of them say that while the story does not have much to offer, the film manages to entertain right through and that it is the best of the Pongal releases so far.
The film marks the comeback of director Nalan after a long time. The filmmaker is best known for 2013's Soodhu Kavvum, featuring Vijay Sethupathi, Ashok Selvan, and Sanchita Shetty, among others. He last directed Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum, starring Vijay Sethupathi and Madonna Sebastian in the lead roles.
Earlier today, Karthik Subbaraj took to X and conveyed his best wishes to Nalan, who played a cameo in the former's Jigarthanda, and the rest of his team. "The OG Nalan Kumarasamy is back in Theatres. Pls don't miss this fun fest... Wishing the entire Vaa Vaathiyaar team great Success at the box office," Karthik wrote.
The film also stars Krithi Shetty, Sathyaraj, Nizhalgal Ravi, and Rajkiran, among others.
