The much-awaited Jana Nayagan trailer is finally here, and it gives a glimpse at the film's massive scale and political ambitions. At the start of the trailer, we get a piece of text on a character's smartphone that says, "Thalapathy Vetri Kondan" (Thalapathy has become successful), which is seemingly a nod at Vijay's political chants for his real-life party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. Later, the H Vinoth directorial's trailer shows Vijay in multiple get-ups, including as an apparent convict, an apparent revolutionary and a police officer. "I am only a normal person but have heard that everything I do is super," Vijay's character tells a child actor's (Lithanya Sivabalan) character. Mamitha Baiju plays Vijay's daughter, Viji, whom he wants to make an Indian Army officer. However, Viji goes through a traumatic event, which seemingly makes her reconsider her father's wish for her to join the army.
Meanwhile, Bobby Deol plays the antagonist, seemingly a terrorist with the mission to destroy India. "On the 30th day from today, India will fall at my feet," Bobby's character can be heard saying in the Jana Nayagan trailer. Prakash Raj plays a politician who is an ally of Bobby's character. We also get a glimpse of Sunil's character, seemingly a goon of Bobby's character who is seething with rage. The trailer also offers a first look at Pooja Hegde, Narain, and Priyamani's characters.
The trailer has only added to the speculation that the film is a remake of director Anil Ravipudi's Bhagavanth Kesari, starring Nandamuri Balakrishna. Earlier, director Vinoth said that audiences should wait for the film's release to know whether the speculation is true and that the film's trailer would give them some 'clarity' about it. With the trailer officially releasing, netizens are claiming that the film is a Bhagavanth Kesari adaptation. The trailer hints at another one of those films where Vijay plays a saviour of the masses; only, this time, there is a political and military layer to the story. At one point, a character calls him a 'Good Samaritan', and elsewhere he declares, "No matter who tells me that they will kill or disgrace me, I have no intention of turning back."
The trailer pays a hat-tip to some of Vijay's iconic film moments, such as with a variation of the "I'm Waiting" line from Thuppakki and a frame that is reminiscent of Vijay entering a theatre in Mersal.
The trailer ends with Vijay's character whipping a group of political goons as he chides them for entering politics with the intention of killing and looting instead of doing selfless service. The final visual also hints at an element of science-fiction in the film, with a robot appearing in front of Vijay's character, ready for a fight.
Jana Nayagan also stars Gautham Vasudev Menon, Reba Monica John and Nasser, among others. Produced by Venkat K Narayana of KVN Productions, the film is slated for a January 09 release in theatres.
