The teaser for the AI-remastered version of Kochadaiyan, supported by EROS' ErosGenAI, was unveiled on Tuesday. The film, which was said to be the first photorealistic motion capture film, stars Rajinikanth and Deepika Padukone in lead roles and is helmed by Soundarya Rajnikanth. Despite the innovation involved in the film, Kochadaiyan didn't open to positive reviews when it was released back in 2014.
Sharing the teaser of the AI-reimagined version of Kochadaiyan, Soundarya penned a note. "Kochadaiyan reimagined. This is an emotion I can’t explain. My first baby. My first leap of faith. More than a decade ago, we dared to attempt something India had never done before ... a photorealistic performance motion capture feature film. It challenged me … It changed me. This one’s personal. Some journeys don’t end. They evolve.
Written by KS Ravikumar, the film featured Rajinikanth playing dual roles and Deepika Padukone in her Tamil debut. The supporting cast also featured Aadhi Pinisetty, Nassar, Shobana and Rukmini Vijayakumar. The story focuses on a warrior from the eighth century who seeks retribution after seeing his father, a kind warrior in his realm, get an illegal penalty from the envious monarch.
Recently, Soundarya, who is fresh off producing With Love, spoke about the criticism she faced following the release of Kochadaiyan. "I'm incredibly proud that even after a decade, no one has attempted another full-fledged performance-capture, motion-capture film like that. It will always remain close to my heart. At the time, the technology was evolving, and every single frame had multiple layers that we painstakingly created. Looking back now, I realise how much technology has advanced," she explained.
On the technical front, Kochadaiyan has music by AR Rahman, cinematography by Padmesh and editing by Anthony. A release date for the remastered version of the film is yet to be announced.
