Can Jailer 2 recreate the musical frenzy of its predecessor? The answer may lie in ‘Ala Bolelo’, the first single from Nelson Dilipkumar’s upcoming Rajinikanth-starrer, which was unveiled on Friday ahead of the film’s October release. While the song brings Rajinikanth back to the dance floor for a brief appearance, it is Shamna Kkasim who takes the spotlight in this Onam-ready number.

Composed and sung by Anirudh Ravichander, ‘Ala Bolelo’ comes with lyrics by Arunraja Kamaraj and additional vocals by Niranjana Raman, Aparna Harikumar and Deepthi Suresh. The four-minute lyrical video takes a Kerala-inspired route, with Shamna performing in a traditional kasavu saree. Rajinikanth appears briefly towards the latter part of the song, acknowledging the dance performance.

The song inevitably invites comparisons with ‘Kaavaalaa’, the chartbuster from Jailer that became a nationwide sensation following its release in 2023. Featuring Tamannaah Bhatia alongside Rajinikanth, the track’s infectious hook, energetic choreography and Tamannaah’s performance helped it dominate social media and music charts, turning it into one of the defining songs of the film.

‘Ala Bolelo’ appears to be aiming for a similar festive energy, although its presentation is markedly different. Instead of a glamour-driven dance number, the new track places Shamna in a traditional Kerala setting, making the song particularly relevant to the Onam season. Whether that regional flavour can translate into the kind of pan-Indian buzz generated by ‘Kaavaalaa’ will become clearer in the coming days.

The song had already attracted attention following the release of its promo, with discussions online surrounding its Malayalam portions and choreography. Following the full song’s release, however, much of the attention has shifted towards Shamna’s performance, with fans praising the actress for carrying the dance number.

Shamna is no stranger to dance-centric performances, having worked predominantly across Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu cinema. Her presence in Jailer 2 adds another dimension to the film’s already expansive cast, which includes returning actors as well as several new additions.

Apart from Rajinikanth and Ramya Krishnan, who reprise their roles as Muthuvel Pandian and Vijaya Pandian, Jailer 2 brings back Yogi Babu, Mirnaa and Rithvik. Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff, who made cameo appearances in the first film, are also expected to feature in the sequel. SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Anna Rajan and Jatin Sarna are among the new additions. Hrithik Roshan and Vijay Sethupathi are also set to make cameo appearances.

Directed by Nelson and produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures, Jailer 2 follows the success of the 2023 action comedy, which revolved around retired jailer Muthuvel Pandian returning to his old ways to protect his family. The sequel is expected to continue from the events of the first film. Jailer 2 is scheduled to release worldwide on October 15.
