In an old interview with The Hindu, actor R Madhavan expressed his disappointment for Hollywood cinema of the recent past with particular criticism for Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and Todd Phillips-Joaquin Phoenix's Joker: Folie à Deux. Some years later, in another conversation with the publication, Madhavan doubled down on his reservation for Hollywood.
When asked about his thoughts on Nolan's new film, The Odyssey, and its premiere in India, Madhavan said that it is a "good" thing for the country. "Good for India. I mean, they are able to respect what we are able to do for them," Madhavan said about the India premiere of Nolan's adaptation of Homer's eponymous poem. He added, acknowledging its box office performance, "The movie is doing really well."
At the same time, Madhavan expressed his contention for English films made in the USA. "I am still not as awestruck by Hollywood the way I was earlier," Madhavan said. He also shared that films such as Inception, Interstellar, A Few Good Men, The Shawshank Redemption, As Good As It Gets, and Pretty Woman "left an indelible mark" in his "persona as a film watcher" rather than as "an actor or as part of the industry".
Madhavan added that he remembers the lines delivered by Al Pacino's character in the 1997 film The Devil's Advocate. "I remember exactly how he said the lines," the actor said while underscoring that the dialogues have stayed in his memory despite him watching the film one or two times.
"I feel that era is gone. I am not able to remember dialogues or characters in the last decade or so that I thought are phenomenal," the actor added.
