The legal proceedings surrounding Vijay's divorce case with his wife Sankgeetha, has been adjourned by the Chengalpattu court to June 15. Sankgeetha, who largely remained away from the public eye for several years, filed for divorce from the actor-turned-politician in February this year.
The postponement comes ahead of the state assembly elections which is scheduled to take place on April 23 with results set to be declared on May 4. The elections are significant for Vijay as he, along with his newly-formed party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is all set to enter the political fray.
Meanwhile, speculations surrounding a divorce by mutual consent between them has surfaced. Reports state that Vijay has accepted to grant divorce to Sankgeetha after discussions were held between legal representatives from both sides. Further, Sankgeetha has reportedly asked for a significant amount of alimony that is based on the asset declared by Vijay ahead of the state assembly elections to secure the future of herself as well as for her children - Jason Sanjay and Dhivya Sasha with certain news reports revealing that the actor has agreed for the amount. An official statement is however awaited.
In her divorce petition, Sankgeetha alleged that Vijay had an extramarital affair with an unnamed actress in 2021. The petition also alleged that Sankgeetha was neglected mentally, emotionally, and physically. It also mentions that she was subjected to verbal disdain.
Sankgeetha mentioned that her financial freedom was restricted, including the restriction of free movement. In November 2025, Sankgeetha had the last of two discussions to explore a mutually honourable exit from their marriage. But an amicable resolution could not be derived.
Sankgeetha and Vijay were married in 1999. But their marriage was registered first in the United Kingdom, in 1998.
