As reported earlier, filmmaker Meera Kathiravan, known for Vizhithiru and Aval Peyar Tamizharasi, is working with Kasthuri Raja and Malavika Manoj on her next, Habeebi. With the film gearing up for release soon, Meera opened up about the choice of casting Malavika, known for Joe and Aan Paavam Pollathathu.

Sharing details on Malavika's role, Meera said as per a press note, "Malavika Manoj plays a character named Nilofer Nisha and will be fondly addressed by all the characters as ‘Nilavu Pulla’ as nickname. When I wrote the script and developed this character, I wanted someone who could portray a girl from the 90s with variations in appearance across two different time periods."

Meera revealed that Malavika was finalised only after auditioning many other actors. "My team and I auditioned more than 200–250 artistes before we came across Malavika Manoj. I felt she was the right choice, especially since the role demanded expressive eyes. After auditioning her, it was wonderful to see the encouragement from her family and her immense passion for acting," he explained.

When Habeebi went on floors, Malavika's Malayalam debut hadn't been released, but she won the hearts of everybody on Meera's set. "At that time, she had completed work on her Malayalam debut Prakasham Paravatte, which hadn’t been released yet. Once she joined us, she impressed everyone on set. Since the role relied heavily on expressions and body language rather than dialogues, we were initially curious about how she would handle it. But she delivered a beautiful performance. Everyone who has watched the film has been appreciating her work. Now, with the grand success of films like Joe and Aan Paavam Pollathathu, it adds even more strength and reach to Habeebi," Meera shared.

The filmmakers describe Habeebi as a poignant story that sensitively and authentically depicts the life, culture, and emotional environment of Tamil Muslims. In keeping with the meaning of its title, "My Beloved", the movie examines issues of love, interpersonal relationships, and life events.

The film's worldwide release will be handled by Raahul of Romeo Pictures. Sam CS is the music composer for Habeebi.
