Members of the Shiv Sena party have filed a case against actor Bala of Kalakka Povathu Yaaru-fame and the makers of his latest film Gandhi Kannadi, directed by Sherief for reportedly featuring scenes and dialogues that disrespect Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The case was filed at the Office of Commissioner of Police in Chennai with a written statement of the complaint, according to a report from Daily Thanthi. Further details of the complaint and a response from the team is awaited.
Gandhi Kannadi revolves around Gandhi's (Balaji Sakthivel) wish of conducting a grand 60th wedding for his wife. As he scrambles to arrange money, he sells his ancestral land. Unfortunately, the cash he receives in Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes for the land becomes invalid due to the demonetisation order imposed in 2016. The rest of the story follows his relentless pursuit, along with Kathir (Bala) who holds an event management company, to fulfil his wife's wishes.
The film offers a veiled commentary on the demonetisation order, highlighting its aftermath. It portrays the struggles of the working class, who were forced to stand in long queues at banks for hours to access cash to manage both their daily needs and major expenses.
Apart from Bala and Balaji Sakthivel, the film stars Namita Krishnamurthy, Archana and Madhan in pivotal roles.
Gandhi Kannadi reunited Sherief with his Ranam- Aram Thavarel cinematographer Balaji K Raja. On the technical front, it had music by Mervin Solomon and Vivek Siva.
