The makers of Gopi Nainar's Karuppar Nagaram announced on Wednesday that dubbing work for the film has commenced. The film stars Jai and Aishwarya Rajesh in the lead roles.
The film has been long under development and was announced back in 2018. Back in 2023, the makers unveiled a teaser for the film. In an interview to CE when the film went on floors, Gopi shared details about the film's plot. "Karuppar Nagaram is about oppressed people and how their talents are not recognised because of their identity. How a youth from such a background tries to safeguard himself is the story. It's also about the culture of football in North Madras. A lot of well-known football players from the area, who are known across the country, are also a part of the cast," he said back in 2018.
It may be noted that Gopi's supposed debut had the same title and starred Kalloori-fame Akhil and Arundhathi in the lead. The film was stalled midway, and a case was filed against Pa Ranjith's Madras, citing that the story had been lifted from Karuppar Nagaram. Years later, it has been revealed that the film has been revived with the same name.
Also starring JD Chakravarthy, Easwari Rao, Daniel Anne Pope and Deepa Shankar, the film has cinematography by NK Ekambaram, music by KS Prasad and editing by Gopi Krishna. The film was previously slated to hit theatres in February 2024. A new release date is yet to be announced for Karuppar Nagaram, which is produced by R Ramesh's RrFilmmakers & Hemant Raj's AGL Productions.
Meanwhile, Gopi Nainar's Manushi has also been in developmental hell, awaiting release for a while now. Trouble for the film began in September 2024, when both the examining and reviewing committees of the CBFC denied certification, citing that the film depicted the state in a “negative light” and blurred distinctions between “leftist communism” and “mainstream communism”. Recently, the Madras High Court decided to directly view the film before ruling on a dispute between its makers and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
