Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman may be one of the most celebrated musicians in the world, but when it comes to movie outings, he enjoys them like any other fan. The maestro revealed in a conversation with IANS that Marvel films have become a frequent pick for him and his team.

“Sometimes we all go for Marvel movies — 20-30 people in the theatre, and we sit at the back and enjoy popcorn; my whole team goes. Every 2-3 months, we go there,” Rahman shared.

When asked if he had a favourite superhero, Rahman replied, “No favourite, just to see what the sound is like.” For him, Marvel outings are less about the characters and more about analysing the auditory experience.

However, he admitted that his creative instincts rarely switch off while watching films. “It’s inevitable that you notice everything, creative mind — you notice what they are doing, how the song is panned, or what the scores are — is it innovative, could it be better — you start criticising — like how people criticise my work,” he said.

Beyond his love for cinema soundscapes, Rahman also opened up about a shift in his personal outlook. After years of working relentlessly across multiple projects, the composer has consciously chosen to slow down. “Sometimes, you plan everything, and it cancels. Sometimes it’s beyond me. I go with the flow, like water. It takes the shape of the container. Even with work, it automatically gives. God had his way of giving me time,” he reflected.

He further admitted that the non-stop pace of his early career often left him missing out on life outside of work. Now, Rahman is choosing to prioritise family and personal time over the constant grind of back-to-back projects.

AR Rahman's most recent album was Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan and helmed by Mani Ratnam. Some of his upcoming projects include Tere Ishk Mein, Ramayana: Part 1, Peddi, Moon Walk, and Gandhi Talks, among others.
