Director Vetri Maaran has been facing heavy flak for sharing that he doesn't give a script to his actors for a film he works on. "I don't give a script to my actors. How can I give one when I don't write," he said in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India.
When probed if the actors know what they will be shooting for the day, he replied, "No, they will know the scenes. What that scene is going to change into, they won't know. The major sequences which is rich in detail like the Vada Chennai intermission scene will be told to them by me. I think most directors work like this."
The filmmaker revealed that for every film, he writes around 400-600 pages. "By the time the film is over, there is that much of script. In Bollywood Calling, the protagonist keeps asking where is the script. When the film is over, the producer hands over the script and says, 'Now I know what my film is, you take the script.' just like that, by the time the film is over, I would have written that," he continued.
He further added that he has 100-150 pages in the beginning which is subject to several changes. "Everybody knows not to trust my first draft. Some actors get bothered by this and they don't work with me," he shared.
The comments have incited mixed reactions from social media users, with many pointing out the dearth of talented writers in Tamil cinema and Vetri Maaran's lack of professionalism. They expressed their disappointment in his working style and lethargy.
The filmmaker, who last directed Viduthalai 2, is currently working on STR 49 with Silambarasan. He is awaiting the release of Bad Girl, which he produced via his Grass Roots Film Company along with Anurag Kashyap. Vetri Maaran said an update regarding STR 49 will arrive within 10-15 days. Further, he noted that after completion of STR 49, he would start the highy-awaited sequel to Vada Chennai, starring Dhanush. He is also working on Suriya's Vaadivaasal. Speaking about the film during the press meet of Bad Girl, he said, "I am not able to reveal much about Vaadivaasal due to a couple of technical reasons. However, updates will roll in soon, in about 10 days."
