Actor Anupama Parameswaran has spoken out about a recent instance of cyberbullying, revealing that she was targeted by a social media user who spread false and defamatory content about her and her family.

In a detailed Instagram post, the Karthikeya 2 and 18 Pages actor shared that she discovered an account circulating “morphed pictures and baseless allegations”, not just about her but also tagging her friends and co-stars. “It was deeply distressing to witness such targeted harassment online,” she wrote.

Upon investigation, the police found that the same person had created multiple fake accounts to spread hateful content about the actor. Anupama promptly approached the Kerala Cyber Crime Police, who were able to trace the culprit. “To my surprise, it turned out to be a 20-year-old girl from Tamil Nadu,” Anupama revealed, adding that she chose not to disclose the young woman’s identity “out of concern for her future and peace of mind.”

While the actor extended empathy to the individual, she also issued a firm warning to those who misuse social media. “Owning a smartphone or having access to social media doesn’t give anyone the right to harass or defame others. Every action online leaves a trace, and accountability will follow,” she cautioned.

Emphasising that legal proceedings are already underway, Anupama said that being in the public eye does not make her or any other artist immune to rights violations. “Being an actor doesn’t mean we forfeit our basic rights. Cyberbullying is a punishable offence — and accountability is real,” she asserted.

The Dragon actor concluded her message with a reminder about responsible online behaviour, urging users to be mindful and empathetic in digital spaces.
