Actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam leader Kamal Haasan is set to get into the Rajya Sabha, Parliament's Upper House, following a pre-election agreement struck with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The other day, the Election Commission announced biennial elections for six vacancies in the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu, slated for July 19, 2025. These seats will become vacant as the terms of six sitting MPs—Anbumani Ramadoss, M Shanmugam, N Chandrasegharan, M Mohammed Abdulla, P Wilson, and Vaiko—conclude on July 25, 2025.

Given the DMK's commanding majority in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, the party is expected to get four of the six available Rajya Sabha seats. The remaining two are likely to go to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). Each Rajya Sabha seat requires a minimum of 34 votes for election.

One of the DMK's anticipated four seats is understood to be earmarked for Kamal Haasan, fulfilling the understanding reached during their 2024 Lok Sabha poll alliance. This arrangement marks Kamal's formal foray into national parliamentary politics.

On the work front, Kamal Haasan is awaiting the release of Thug Life, the action film that will reunite him with his Nayakan director Mani Ratnam. Also starring Silambarasan TR, Trisha, Joju George, Nasser, and Abhirami, among others, the film is slated for a June 05 release.
