Actor-turned-politician Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, has become embroiled in controversy after a police complaint was filed against him in Chennai. The Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamaat has accused him of offending the Muslim community through his recent Iftar gathering, which was organised at Royapettah YMCA grounds in Chennai, on Friday. The complaint was officially submitted to the Chennai Police Commissioner’s office, urging legal action over the alleged insult to religious sentiments.

According to reports, Syed Ghous, the state treasurer of the Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamaat, lodged the complaint, later addressing the media about his concerns. He asserted that the Iftar gathering, organised by Vijay’s political party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), was disrespectful to the Muslim faith. Ghous claimed that the event included individuals who had no association with fasting or Islamic customs, referring to them as "drunkards and rowdies," and arguing that their presence diminished the sanctity of Iftar.

He further criticised the arrangements at the event, alleging that poor planning led to chaos and discomfort among attendees. Drawing parallels with Vijay’s political rally in Vikravandi, Ghous recalled similar issues with mismanagement. He claimed that inadequate arrangements at the rally left many without drinking water, leading to dehydration and even causing some attendees to collapse.

Ghous suggested that the actor-politician’s involvement was driven more by political motives than by genuine respect for Islamic traditions. “Despite the disorder at the Iftar gathering, Vijay has not shown any regret or taken accountability. This raises doubts about whether he truly respects religious beliefs or if his participation was a mere political strategy,” he added.

On the professional front, Vijay was last seen in Venkat Prabhu’s 2024 film The GOAT and is currently working on Jananayagan, directed by H Vinoth, where he stars alongside Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, and Bobby Deol. The film will mark his final, following which the actor is set to quit the film industry and concentrate wholly on politics. The actor officially entered politics last year with the formation of Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam(TVK).
